Sustainable living and preserving the planet is the need of the hour. But, how many of us are working towards it? Well, that is a different topic of debate. For now, let us focus on those who are using technologies in the best possible manner to preserve the planet Earth. (Image: Screengrab from Thooshan website)
At the beginning of 2020, scientists at the CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) at Pappanamcode developed a technology that helps in manufacturing 100% biodegradable tableware, including dishes and cups, from wheat bran. And soon NIIST, transferred the technology to Aura Exim, a Kochi-based company that makes edible wheat bran plates called Thooshan. Thooshan is a Kochi-based edible tableware brand that is now redefining the sustainable lifestyle in India with a mission to start a cutlery revolution, with single-use cutleries that are also edible. As per a statement of the brand on its website, these tablewares can be used as cattle feed, fish feed, or poultry feed. (Image: Facebook/Thooshan)
With a motive to safeguard the planet Earth and make eating a responsible affair, they have been making edible wheat bran plats, areca palm plates, wheat bran spoons, coconut palm leaf straws, and wheat bran forks. All the products are eco-friendly, biodegradable, have longer shelf life, fungus and bacteria-resistant, microwave-friendly, and interestingly, one bite worthy. (Image: istock)
According to their website, the motive is to eliminate the gap between single-use cutlery and the accumulation of its waste. Their products are 100 percent biodegradable and edible to a certain extent. Also, using agricultural waste like wheat husks, help them generate additional sources of revenue for the farmers. Soon the brand will be introducing food containers and disposable cups as a part of the initiative too. (Image: istock)
